Description

The Sahaj Path is an initiative by Mr. Prosenjit Dawn and Mr. Mantu Hait to conserve wetland biodiversity of Rural Howrah district in West Bengal, India. A part of the Damodar Floodland is maintained undisturbed as reserve for the wetland biodiversity, named Sahaj Path. Regular Biodiversity documentation of this area is done for last two years, and one Wetland Biodiversity Workshop and Nature Study Camp was organized on 29th Sept to 2nd October 2023. This dataset represents the Flora and Fauna observed and identified till date at least once from the study area. Most of the records are photographic and uploaded to iNaturalist under the Project 'Biodiversity of "Sahaj Path", Donki Wetlands'.

Purpose

This dataset contains observation records of 300+ species of flora and fauna from the rural Wetland of Howrah district. The wetlands are severely threatened due to agricultural practices and other anthropogenic activities. This primary data can help researchers to plan their future research. We will have a baseline data to work on in upcoming years to understand the dynamics of biodiversity with time.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The study was doen from 2021 to 2023 based on photographic documentations and human observations.

Sampling

No systematic sampling was done. Sampling were mostly opportunistic. Light traps were used for some insect observations, Traditional fishing gears were used for Fishes occasionally.

Quality Control

Identification were confirmed only by the experts based on photographic evidences. In case of doubtful identifications individuals were identified only up to family or genus level.

Method steps

  1. Instruments used: Zeiss 10x32, Zeiss 8x42, Olympus 8x42 Binoculars; Nikon P900, Nikon D7000 with 105 mm macro lens. Methods: Field observations for most animals and plants substantiated by Photographic evidences. Techniques: As there was no systematic data collection, individual records for different flora and fauna were included in the dataset.

Geographic Coverages

The study area includes a floodland of Damodar river situated in the vicinity of Donki Village, Amta, Howrah, West Bengal, India. This is a lowland uninhabited by human but having mostly cropfields, waterbodies and irrigation canals. These lands generally remain submerged for nearly 6 months every years from september to January and act as major breeding site for indigenous fishes and reserve for other aquatic animals and plants including Freshwater Turtles.
