Description

We provide occurrence data of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam with corresponding DNA derived data. The black flies were collected by Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre (TIDREC), Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, except black flies from Thailand. DNA barcodes based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene generated from the black fly samples are used to establish a database in GBIF. This project (BIFA6_017) is funded by the GBIF-BIFA program.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

All black fly samples were collected from flowing streams.

Sampling

Black fly samples collection was done at the accessible streams and rivers, whereby these are the breeding habitats for larvae and pupae of black flies. Pupae that attached on substrates such as leaves, stems, twigs, grasses and roots were collected using forceps. Then it will be kept alive individually in vials until adult emergence before being preserved in 80% ethanol for the identification process. The methods of collection and identification followed those of Takaoka (2003) and Adler et al. (2004).

Method steps

  1. The study procedures are as follows: sample collection, sample identification, sample DNA extraction, PCR.

Additional info

Black fly samples, except from Thailand, of this dataset are deposited in the laboratories of Institute of Biological Sciences and TIDREC, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. Upon collection from study sites in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, the black fly samples were indexed in the format of "Nation_Locality_Stream_# where collection occured_Vial_# where the sample from respective stream kept". For instance, the black fly sample from the first vial of stream 1, Lombok, Indonesia would be indexed as "IN_LB_S1V1". The black fly samples collected are individually preserved in 80% ETOH in a 2.0 mL tube and stored at -20 degree Celsius.

Taxonomic Coverages

Geographic Coverages

The black fly samples were collected from different localities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
