Sihong Hongze Lake Wetland National Nature Reserve is an area of high biodiversity around Hongze Lake. We conducted a one-year bird survey applying fixed-point method in the reserve from July 2020 to June 2021, and provided an occurrence dataset with detailed species and geographic information. The occurrence dataset recorded a total of 201,918 detections of 215 species belonging to 18 orders and 55 families. 16 species were listed in the IUCN Red List as Threatened Species.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The Sihong Hongze Lake Wetlands National Nature Reserve birds survey was conducted monthly from July 2020 to June 2021, and the scope of this survey is: 33.19 N and 33.32 N Latitude; 118.22 E and 118. 58 E Longitude.Sampling
We used sampling points method to investigate species composition and individual quantity of birds in Sihong Hongze Lake Wetlands National Nature Reserve. The observation range was a circular area with a radius of 1 km, and the observation time of each study points was 30-40 minutes. Only the birds flying into the sample area were counted, while the birds flying out of the area were not.Quality Control
The counting method adopts the combination of accurate counting method and estimation method. The small number of groups adopts direct accurate counting method while the large number of groups adopts group statistics method.Method steps
- In this study, the fixed-point observation method was used to record the number of bird species individual quantity in reserve. A total of 16 study points were set up that covering different habitats . The investigation time of bird survey is generally chosen the morning or evening in good weather condition, and each survey lasts for 5-7 days. During the bird survey, the investigators used 20× 60 single-tube telescope (Nikon, Japan) and 10×42 binoculars (Shuntu, China) to survey each fixed-point, and the species and numbers of all birds within the observation range should be recorded. The observation range was a circular area with a radius of 1 km, and the observation time of each study points was 30-40 minutes. Only the birds flying into the sample area were counted, while the birds flying out of the area were not. The counting method adopts the combination of accurate counting method and estimation method. The small number of groups adopts direct accurate counting method while the large number of groups adopts group statistics method. At the same time, a Canon EOS 70d camera with an EF 100-600mm f/4.5-5.6L ISII USM lens was used to photograph birds and their habitats in study sites. The determination of species name and bird classification was mainly based on the A Checklist on the Classification and Distribution of the Birds of China (Third Edition).
