Atlas of Living Australia (2024). Sunshine Coast Annual Frog and Toad Field Survey. Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/fyfqmx accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-13.Description
Annual field surveys are conducted in February and March, towards the end of Queensland's wet season. Frogs are counted by sightings or hearing their calls. The number of frogs, species types, and age groups are also logged. Cane toads are counted by sightings and logged within the same data.Purpose
A coordinated citizen science program run by ECOllaboration (a not-for-profit organization) on behalf of Sunshine Coast Regional Council, to collect meaningful data regarding local frog species and raise awareness for native frog conservation on the Sunshine Coast.
Sampling Description
Quality Control
Qualified animal ecologists were present at all surveys to assist with identification. Any species identification that remained scientifically uncertain was sent through for verification to the team at Frog ID/Australian Museum.Method steps
- A number of sites are surveyed in the northern and central regions of the Sunshine Coast. Some sites need to be changed for access, safety, or biodiversity reasons (i.e. not enough species diversity to engage the public). Each site is divided into 10 x 10m square quadrats, placed along a transect line (100m in length). Each transect was drawn alongside the dominant waterbody at the site and this source was tested using our U52 Horiba water monitoring device. The survey period is 10 minutes in each quadrant. Audio recordings were created during survey periods so that confirmations of frog species and possible numbers could be verified later. The survey method is approved by the DAF Animal Ethics Committee with a registration number of CA 2022/08/1633.
Additional info
Measurements of nearby water quality are not always obtained due to a variety of reasons, including the source drying up in period of drought and/or, aquatic vegetation barriers preventing safe access or, on rare occasions, failure of equipment.Taxonomic Coverages
