Description

8 hour schools and public bioblitz survey of all species in all coastal habitats within the Combe Martin area. Run by the North Devon AONB and held on 14th March 2017. The aim of the survey was to record the presence of as many species as possible throughout the day. Records include terrestrial, freshwater and marine species which were recorded within intertidal and coastal habitat 'zones' created specifically for the bioblitz event.

Purpose

The purpose of the dataset was to find as many species as possible within an 8 hour period using the Citizen Science 'Bioblitz' protocol

Sampling Description

Quality Control

All records submitted were verified by an assigned natural history expert at the event or just after the event. A 20% QA was carried out using internal procedure by the Data Team at the Marine Biological Association, Plymouth. As only the first record of a species was recorded, any abundance information is entered in the speciesNotes field with the species simply being recorded as present.

Method steps

  1. Records collected from intense 8 hour search for species by school children, members of the public, amateur naturalists and scientists. Each record was verified by an experienced recorder.

Additional info

Further information about the survey event can be sought from the Coastal Creatures project manager the at North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)

Taxonomic Coverages

Geographic Coverages

All records were collected within the Combe Martin coastal area (intertidal and coastal land) in grid square SS5747. Precision is between 100m and 800m with the majority of records are collated within 100m.
