EDP Baixo Sabor: Land Birds - Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases: Maçãs and Angueira river valleys [2010-2014]. EDP - Energias de Portugal. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/5qyfeu accessed via GBIF.org on 2022-05-27.

Description

The dataset contains records of land birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in the upper Sabor sub-basin, outside the area of influence of the dams, from February 2010 to September 2014. These points were thus used as controls to assess the impact of the Sabor Dams. Sampling was performed in selected points distributed along the Maçãs and Angueira river valleys. The presence and identity of bird species were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation, with the support of binoculars. The records include taxa identified at the species or genus levels.

Purpose

This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will make available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Maçãs and Angueira river valleys, in the upper Sabor sub-basin, up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros.

Sampling

Sampling was designed to cover the most relevant habitats for land birds in a buffer of 5 km around the lower reach of the Sabor river and its main tributaries. A total of 12 point counts were distributed in a grid of 12 5x5 km squares. At each count point, a 10-minute session was performed, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. The identification was made "in situ" by experienced observers, with the support of appropriate field guides.

Quality Control

All individual identifications were performed by qualified technicians
