Fish species occurrences in the Tana River Basin, Kenya, digitized from the Ichthyology collection at the National Museums of Kenya and from recent field expeditions. Version 1.3. Description

The dataset contains species occurrence records for fish from the Tana River Basin. The records were digitized from specimen labels of the Ichthyology collection at the National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi, supplemented by data from recent fieldwork in the Tana River Basin.

Purpose

The dataset was created as a contribution towards fish species occurrences records for the Tana River Basin Biodiversity Information System portal.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Tana River Basin sampled at different time periods and at different localities.

Sampling

The study included an assessment of the NMK Ichthyology collection and literature material on work done on the fishes of the Tana River Basin. It also included field expeditions in the Tana River Basin to collect and study specimens.

Quality Control

Species identifications have been checked by various ichthyologists working at the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) for accuracy and correct taxonomy.

Method steps

  1. Information was mined from Specimen labels at the Ichthyology collection, National Museums of Kenya. The data was cleaned and validated by ichthyology experts. The data was then transformed to Darwin Core standards and uploaded to GBIF through the IPT at the National Museums of Kenya.
