Acero P A, Polanco F. A, Tavera Vargas J J (2023). Checklist of Caribbean marine fishes of Colombia. Asociación Colombiana de Ictiólogos. Checklist dataset https://doi.org/10.15472/430hyn accessed via GBIF.org on 2025-06-18.

Description

A comprehensive list of the marine fishes found in the Colombian Caribbean is presented. The primary objective of this compilation is to provide accurate and reliable information about the recorded fish species inhabiting the portion of the Caribbean Sea that falls within Colombia's jurisdiction. This list has been meticulously developed through review of scientific collections and the validation of records, including vouchers, photographs, and biological evidence. We conducted detailed examinations of specimens, incorporated the latest records, and considered recent revisions that pertain to both isolated locations, such as the island keys of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, and deep-sea ecosystems(waters below 200 m). In terms of numbers, we present a total of 1,329 listed species. These species belong to four distinct classes, encompassing 59 orders, 206 families, and 649 genera. Among the main findings, we present 5 species that are being reported for the first time in the Colombian Caribbean. This represents a significant contribution to the existing knowledge basis. Additionally, we have identified 16 species that are exclusively endemic to this particular area, further emphasizing the unique biodiversity and ecological significance of the Colombian Caribbean. Out of the 1329 species on the list, the data shows 1328, as there are two undescribed morphs belonging to the same genus (Elacatinus). Therefore, the LSID (Life Science Identifier) cannot be duplicated. That is why the data only includes 1328 species.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Colombian continental and oceanic marine ecosystems located in the Caribbean Sea within the following coordinates: Minimal latitude 7° 54' 18" N (7.905°), minimal longitude 82° 14' 0" W (-82.2333°), maximal latitude 15° 30' 10" N (15.5028°), maximal longitude 70° 41' 40.6" W (-70.6946°) (http://marineregions.org/mrgid/25303). Ecosistemas marinos continentales y oceánicos colombianos ubicados en el mar Caribe comprendidos en las siguientes coordenadas: latitud mínima 7° 54' 18" N (7.905°), longitud mínima 82° 14' 0" W (-82.2333°), latitud máxima 15° 30' 10" N (15.5028°), longitud máxima 70° 41' 40.6" W (-70.6946°)

Sampling

The list was extracted based on records deposited in five ichthyological collections, one national, the largest and most complete current repository of marine species in Colombia, and four international collections that house material collected in the maritime area under Colombian jurisdiction between the 1960s and 1980s. First, all species found in the Invemar national collection were compiled; second, species collected in Colombia by foreign expeditions, verified by specimens in the aforementioned collections, were added; third, species records based on photographs or tissue samples were added; fourth, the taxonomy and updated nomenclature of the records were verified following Calcademy, Worms and FishBase. The classification of taxa from ordinal and supraordinate taxonomic ranks (class to suborder) and the order of arrangement of the respective taxa followed the proposal of Last et al. (2016) for Chondrichthyans and Betancur-R. et al. (2017) for bony fishes.

Method steps

  1. 1. We compiled all species found in the national collection of Invemar; 2. We added species collected in Colombia by foreign expeditions below 200 m depth, verified by specimens in the fish collections of the NNHM, MCZ, UF, ANSP; 3. We added species records supported through photographs or tissue samples; 4. We verified the taxonomy and updated nomenclature of the records following Calcademy, Worms y FishBase. The classification of taxa from ordinal and supraordinate taxonomic ranks (class to suborder) and the order of arrangement of the respective taxa followed the proposal of Last et al. (2016) for Chondrichthyans and Betancur-R. et al. (2017) for bony fishes.
