The biological data were obtained between 1987 and 2013.Over this period the survey objectives varied as did the technology of the monitoring and sampling programmes, including differences in trawl gear and fishing vessel. For most survey years fish were collected from commercial trawling vessels using a standard commercial orange roughy net fitted with 40 mm cod-end liners. Exceptions were 1987 and 1992, when an Engel high rise bottom trawl, with a 40 mm cod-end liner, was deployed from the CSIRO’s research vessel. Biological sampling was associated with acoustic surveys in most years and used primarily for species identification, and to collect representative samples from aggregations of fish for length, weight, sex, gonad stage or retaining otoliths for ageing. The protocol was to collect 200 sexed fish lengths and 50 otolith pairs per trawl. Demersal trawls were targeted on aggregations of orange roughy determined by the vessel’s acoustics but catches were limited in many years by the available vessel quota (using windows in the trawl, or fishing on the side of large aggregations).
