The "Parque Estadual da Pedra Selada" houses 303 species, of which 297 are native to Brazil, 78 are endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, and seven are endemic to the state of Rio de Janeiro. More than 60% of the species are woody, and more than 40% are trees. Eight species are threatened with extinction, five are categorized as Endangered, and three as Vulnerable. One species was classified as Data Deficient (DD). Our results increase the knowledge of the Atlantic Forest flora in the state of Rio de Janeiro and support effective conservation planning for this protected area.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The "Parque Estadual da Pedra Selada (PESC)" covers the municipalities of Itatiaia and Resende, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Coordinates: 22°28'55"S and 22°16'13"S Latitude; 44°20'48"O and 44°36'17"O Longitude.Sampling
The list of vascular plants collected in the PEPS was generated from the compilation of data obtained from four databases: JABOT GERAL, JABOT RB, Herbário Virtual REFLORA, and speciesLink. The data were compiled in September 2022, with the filter location = "Pedra Selada". Searches returned a total of 1,326 specimens (JABOT GERAL = 214; JABOT RB = 490; REFLORA = 490; speciesLink = 132). The specimens identified to species were separated manually, resulting in: JABOT GERAL = 154 (undetermined = 60), JABOT RB = 348 (undetermined = 142), REFLORA = 368 (undetermined = 122), and speciesLink = 114 (undetermined = 18). Duplicates were removed based on the name of the collector, number, and year of collection, and one record per species was selected, prioritizing those records with digitized specimens. Records whose locations did not fall within the PEPS area were also excluded. After these corrections, a preliminary list of 298 species was checked and validated by taxonomists using images available in the online databases.Quality Control
A preliminary list of 298 specimens was checked and validated by 16 taxonomists, using images available in herbaria and their online databases.Method steps
- The dataset initially contained 1,326 records downloaded from Jabot, SpeciesLink, and Reflora. These records underwent a series of filtering steps: first, records determined at the species level were selected, reducing the number to 984. After removing duplicates, 376 records remained. These were then sent for taxonomist review, resulting in 298 records. Finally, after taxonomists revised the species, 303 species were confirmed for inclusion.
