EDP Foz Tua: Terrestrial Birds (transects) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2009-2012]. EDP - Energias de Portugal. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/ptqhy5 accessed via GBIF.org on 2022-07-04.

Description

The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2010-12) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the winter of 2009/10, 2011 and 2012, and in spring of 2011 during field visits to 24 (2010/11) or 30 (2011-12) transects with favorable habitats in 26 2x2 km squares within a 5-km radius buffer around the Tua valley, directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes.

Purpose

This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will made available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça, Mirandela and Vila Flor.

Sampling

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitats for terrestrial birds along the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam, including the future reservoir area. A total of 30 line transects was established in the flooded area and in control points upstream, along the river Tua. All transects were sampled once in winter and twice in the reproductive period, in spring (only in 2011), in the early morning or late afternoon. Each transect was walked on foot at a constant speed of 1-2 km/h and lasted no less than 30 minutes. All contacts with birds (visual or audictive) were recorded separately for two bands of distance (<50m and> 50m).
Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.

Quality Control

All identifications were performed by qualified technicians
