Description

The dataset containing information on fungi (agaricoid basidiomycetes) occurrences in the territory of the Yugyd va National Park, located in the Subpolar and Northern Urals, European North-East Russia. In total, 468 species of agaricoid basidiomycetes have been found within the borders of the Yugyd va National Park. The herbarium specimens are stored in the Herbarium of the Institute of Biology of Komi Scientific Centre of the Ural Branch RAS (SYKO). The dataset includes 1249 records.

Most of the occurrences’ descriptions included the following fields: "countryCode", "stateProvince", "county", "locality", "verbatimLocality", "decimalLatitude", "decimalLongitude", "geodeticDatum", "coordinateUncertaintyInMeters", "verbatimCoordinateSystem", "georeferencedBy", "habitat", "eventDate", "year", "month", "day", "recordedBy", "identifiedBy", "associatedReferences", "associatedMedia".

The work was carried out with the financial support of the project «Herbarium funds of the biological diversity of plants and fungi of the Collection Fund of the Komarov Botanical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences: modernization, development and networking as a basis for fundamental research and improvement of genetic technologies» (Agreement No. 075-15-2021-1056 dated 09/28/2021).

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The material was collected in the northern (Subpolar Ural) and southern (Northern Ural) parts of the Yugyd va National Park. In the northern part of the national park, foothill and mountain landscapes located in the upper and middle reaches of the basin of the Kozhim River (the ridges of Rosomaha, Maldynyrd, Western Saledy, Yuasnyrd, Obeiz) and its large tributaries – the Balbanyu river, Limbekoyu river and Syvyu river. In the southern part – foothill and mountain landscapes in the basins of the Shchugor river (lower course), Podcherem river (all over) and Torgovaya river (lower course).

Sampling

The authors contributing to the dataset used standard methods of fungal collection. The results of this study were documented in the Herbarium of the Institute of Biology of Komi Scientific Centre of the Ural Branch RAS (SYKO).

Quality Control

Data has been collected, and species identification was made or checked by mycologists from the Institute of Biology of Federal Research Centre Komi Science Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Some specimens were verified mycologist from Komarov Botanical Institute RAS. Taxonomic names spelling were verified using Index Fungorum database. Taxonomic names were brought to modern synonyms by the same source. The dataset was checked for errors and cleaned by methods described by R. Mesibov in A Data Cleaner's Cookbook [Mesibov 2021].

Method steps

  1. The data of long-term field studies of the authors conducted in the Yugyd va National Park (Komi Republic) were summarized on the MS Excel sheet. When carrying out field work, a route method was used to survey the sites typical for the growth of agaricoid fungi. For all identified locations of the specimens, geographical coordinates were recorded using Garmin CSX 60 GPS receiver (WGS 84) and a brief description of phytocenotic parameters were fixed. The herbarium label data were taken from fungi collection of Institute of Biology of Komi Scientific Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Herbarium (SYKOf).
  2. The authors prepared occurrence data of every fungal occurrence record from the territory of the Yugid va National Park, not previously published in GBIF, with a common xlsx-template based on the occurrence template recommended by the GBIF (https://www.gbif.org/ru/news/82852/new-darwin-corespreadsheet-templates-simplify-data-preparation-and-publishing). Authors were allowed to add Darwin Core terms as additional fields in their xlsx-files. The values in the fields “decimalLongitude” and “decimalLatitute” were filled with original GPS coordinates and the “coordinateUncertaintyInMeters” field was set to a single value of 30 meters (means standard error of the GPS receiver). The "publication" field was used in order to reflect the reference to the publication of species occurrence. Each record in the occurrence dataset also included a URL leading to the corresponding occurences’ herbarium labels and species images.

Taxonomic Coverages

A total 468 species and intraspecific taxa of agaricoid basidiomycetes have been found in the Yugyd va National Park. All of them belong to agaricoid basidiomycetes (phylum Basidiomycota, class Agaricomycetes) include higher basidiomycetes known as mushrooms and toadstools (agarics and boletes). A total of five orders are represented, with Agaricales (393 species), Russulales (54 species), Boletales (22 species) constituting about 99% of the collection. The spectrum of leading families and genera is generally characteristic of boreal biotas, as evidenced by the high species diversity of the families Russulaceae (11.6% of the total species diversity), Cortinariaceae (10.1%), Hymenogastraceae (8.7%) and genera Cortinarius (10.1%), Lactarius (7.7%), Mycena (6.6%), Galerina (5%). The volume and names of families, genera and species of fungi are given according to the Index Fungorum database (http://www.indexfungorum.org, acc.date – 01.03.2022).

Geographic Coverages

The Yugyd va (Clear Water) National Park was created in 1994 with the aim of preserving the unique natural complexes of mountain-tundra and mountain-taiga ecosystems of the Ural Range, and since 1995 it has been included in the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List “Virgin Forests Komi". National Park is located on the border of Europe and Asia, on the western slopes of the Subpolar and Northern Urals – the highest part of the Ural Mountains. More than half of the area of the national park is occupied by high mountains, about a third – by a foothill ridged strip, the rest is a flat landscape of the Pechora lowland. The entire territory of the park is located in the subzone of the northern taiga, in its mountainous part, the vertical zonality of vegetation is clearly expressed. The dominant type of vegetation is forests, covering more than half of the area of the national park, mountain tundra occupy a significant place in the vegetation cover. Bogs, shrubs, valley and mountain meadows occupy subordinate positions in landscapes. In the Pechora lowland, under conditions of excessive moisture, swampy spruce forests of Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.) and birch-spruce forests with an admixture of downy birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) communities of long moss and sphagnum types predominate (Flory …, 2016). In swampy forests, Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) is often found as an admixture in forest stands, and in some places there are areas with a predominance of this species (Nepomilueva, 1974). There are secondary birch forests on clearings and burnt areas. A distinctive feature of the forest vegetation of the reserve is the insignificant participation of Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), small massifs of sphagnum and lichen pine forests are found on the plain in the lower reaches of the Kozhim river, Podcherem river and others. In the foothill zone, due to the significant dissection of the relief, the intensity of swamping is reduced. The northern part of the foothills is characterized by spruce and birch-spruce forests, sometimes with an admixture of Siberian pine, green moss grass and sphagnum types (Flory …, 2016; Dubrovsky et al., 2019). South of 65°N the role of fir (Abies sibirica Ledeb.) in the vegetation cover of the ridged strip increases significantly, and spruce-fir communities begin to dominate, and massifs of pure fir forests are noted in river valleys. Fir forests are represented by green moss and grass types. Occasionally, Siberian pine-spruce long moss forests develop on poorly drained habitats (Dubrovsky et al., 2019). In mountain landscapes, the change in the nature of vegetation occurs along latitudinal and altitudinal gradients. Throughout the entire Ural Range within the Yugyd Va National Park, the mountain-forest belt begins with a strip of spruce, birch-spruce, spruce-fir and fir forests of green moss type (Flory …, 2016). In the north of the reserve, with an ascent to the mountains, they are replaced by larch forests, and even higher – by larch woodlands. The largest areas are occupied by larch plantations of the green moss type. Under the sparse canopy of Larix sibirica Ledeb. a dense undergrowth of Betula nana L. is formed (Flory …, 2016). To the south of the Schugor and Podcherem rivers, spruce forests give way to spruce-fir and fir communities with an increase in the height of the relief, and further – light forests of birch. The forest vegetation of mountain valleys and runoff hollows is more diverse. Herbaceous types of larch and spruce forests with fir are formed here, alternating with areas of mountain meadows. Plots of shrub-moss and moss-lichen mountain tundras already appear among mountain-forest open forests, lichen tundras are located in the mountain-tundra and bald belts (Kulugina, Dubrovsky, 2020). Their areas increase as the height of the mountains increases. Above 1000-1100 m a.s.l. on the North Ural and 300-700 m a.s.l. in the Subpolar Ural, rocky placers, almost devoid of vegetation, stretch.
