“Chronicles of Nature” are a standard report format in use since the 1930s that collects the annual for phenology and biodiversity data in the Nature Reserves of Russia. These reports include data gathered by professional researchers using standardized methodologies in a system of strictly protected areas (in Russian “zapovednik”), that represents the world’s first continent-wide long-term monitoring scheme. Here we provide a long-term dataset on phenological phenomena for the territory of Prioksko-Terrasnyi Biosphere Reserve (Moscow region, Russia) collected in course of the “Chronicles of Nature” scientific program. The data cover the period of 75 years, 1946-2020. Since 1946 up to 1993 field data were collected by staff researchers of the Federal State Budgetary Institution (FSBI) “Prioksko-Terrasnyi National Nature Biosphere Reserve named after M.A. Zablotsky”, that conducts legal management of the biosphere reserve. Over the years in the pnenological monitoring were involved: A.S. Liseev, L.P. Poznanin, D.A. Koriakin, G.A. Milovanova, E.M. Kaliaeva, L.V. Zablotskaya, M.M. Zablotskaya, E.V. Lavreneva, V.I. Danilov, V.T. Popchenko, L.A. Panicheva, M.Kh. Ableev (1946-1993), M.M. Zablotskaya and G.V. Sokolova (1993-2016), G.V. Sokolova and A.V. Tarasov (2017-2019). The rangers of the Biosphere Reserve also participated in data collection during 1946-2015. The dataset includes observation dates of 32 types of events in the life of various taxa of animals (birds, insects, and arachnids), fungi, and vascular plants were observed annually. For vascular plants we recorded 15 annual events described vegetation, flowering, fruiting and withering; 8 for birds (for example, spring and autumn migration, reproduction and wintering), 5 for insects, and 2 for arachnids and fungi. The second version of the data set is presented. In comparison with the previous one, all phenological sampling plots are georeferenced more exactly, about 2000 incorrect records were excluded or corrected. This version systematizes phenomena, specifies the phenomena names and indicators of phenomena (methods of the registration). We also added about 1000 records from reports, missing in the first version for 1948-2016 and updated the data for 2017-2023
Sampling Description
Study Extent
Major ecosystem type: boreal and nemoral forests. Major habitats & land cover types: (1) Mixed pine forests with birch (Betula spp.), oak (Quercus robur) and lime (Tilia cordata); (2) sandy pine (Pinus sylvestris) and spruce (Picea abies) forests with elements of taiga and patches of sphagnum bog providing habitats for Andromeda polifolia, Oxycoccus quadripetalus and Drosera rotundifolia; (3) relict steppe grassland with Aconitum anthora, Carex obtusa, Dentaria tenuifolia etc. Territory of the BR used in scientific and educational purposes all year round. Integrated monitoring and scientific research are aimed at studying of the climate changes and pollution impact on ecosystems.Sampling
The observations of phenomena in the life of insects and birds were carried out daily inside boarder of the BR core area while on patrol and during special itinerary of excursions, without exact georeference of the observation points. The observation of phenomena in the life of plants was carried out in 33 permanent phenological sampling plots (20 × 20 m) with frequency not rarer than 1 time in 3 days by professional scientists or laboratory assistance. Every sampling plot was georeferenced. The methodology of observations is described in the guidelines for maintaining the Сhronicle of Nature: Filonov, K.P. & Nukhimovskaya, Y.D. The Chronicles of Nature in Zapovedniks of the USSR. Methodological Notes. Nauka Press, Moscow, 1990 (in Russian). Zharkov, I.V. Basic Nature Observations. USSR Ministry of Agriculture publishing House, Moscow, 1954 (in Russian) Preobrazhenskiy, S.M. & Galahov, N.N. Phenological Monitoring. Detskoe Gosudarstvennoe Izdatelstvo, Moscow, 1948 (in Russian)Quality Control
The data collected during the year is summarized in the annual scientific report “Chronicles of Nature”. Data quality control is provided by the staff scientists and the Deputy Director for science of the BR in the beginning of the annual report "Chronicle of Nature" compilation. Second stage of data quality control is performed by the Scientific Council of the BR, which consists of scientific staff of the FSBI and number of researchers of other scientific institutions. The report on the program "Chronicle of Nature" is deposited in the library of the FSBI and in the archive of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation. The "Chronicle of Nature"reports digitized in 2015-2019. All the dates of phenological events were automatically checked against correct order of events and to find outliers. Detected outliers and inconsistencies were checked using primary field data. If an error was detected, an adjustment was made. If no errors were detected, the outliers were saved in the dataset.Method steps
- 1. Annual data collection by researchers and rangers throughout the year according to the methodology described; 2. Phenological records collection and summarization in the form of annual scientific report "Chronicle of Nature" for the past year. 3. Data digitization from the "Chronicle of nature" reports for the period 1948-2017. 4. First dataset version publication through gbif.org. 5. Verification of previously digitized data for 1948-2017, errors fixation and data addition for periods of 1946-1947 and 2017-2019.
