The presented list of species is the result of long-standing research of short-horned flies in the territory of the Zhiguli Reserve and a synthesis of previously published data from other researchers. 653 species of flies from 45 families are identified. The main material for this list was the author’s collections from 1980 to 2007. In addition, it includes the data from a number of publications (Dmitriyev, 1935; Novoderezhkin, 2005; Zimina, 1976a, 1976b, 1981; Tolstoguzova, 1996; Chuzhekova, Polyakova, 2007). In the Brachycera fauna, 653 species from 45 families are identified, of which 482 were the first for this territory. The greatest species diversity was observed in the families Syrphidae (163 species), Tachinidae (78), Tephritidae (57) and Asilidae (50). The methods of field collection included a traditional set of techniques used in faunal researches of insects (catching by butterfly net, capture by mowing along grass and shrubs, captures by light), followed by determination of the collected material, often using temporary genital preparations. Identification of a part of the material was verified by narrow specialists of ZIN RAS (St. Petersburg).Taxonomic Coverages
Geographic Coverages
The Zhiguli Reserve is located in the northern mountainous part of the territory of Samarskaya Luka, a bend of the Volga river in its middle course.
The modern appearance of the Zhiguli Mountains is estimated at 7-10 million years. At present, erosion processes here are insignificant, since the fractured karst rocks of which they are composed (limestones and dolomites) almost completely absorb surface water.
Climatic conditions around Samarskaya Luka over the past 10 million years have repeatedly changed due to glacial dynamics and marine transgressions. No processes almost affected the Zhiguli Mountains, which makes the Zhiguli the most important refugium in the east of the European part of Russia.
The climate of Samarskaya Luka is temperate continental with warm summers and frosty winters. The area is characterized by high humidity, the annual precipitation here is about 500 mm, which is about 5% more than in the surrounding area. The Zhiguli also have a higher snow cover (more than 40 cm). A characteristic feature of the climate of this region is the rapid transition from summer heat to autumn cold and from winter cold to summer warm, as well as the frequent repetition of long periods with the same weather (Kudinov, 1982).
The hydrologic regime of Samarskaya Luka is characterized by a significant water shortage due to the high water permeability of the underlying rocks.
The complex orography of Samarskaya Luka and the territory of the reserve significantly affects the microclimatic differentiation of individual biotopes and provides a wide variety of living organisms.
The research area is also of interest as a border area located at the junction of the forest-steppe and steppe zones and is characterized by a diversity of biotopes. Forests in general, occupy about 95% of the reserve.
The mountainous part of the territory is characterized by forests of common pine in the first layer, oak, linden and maple – in the second layer. On the tops of the mountains, there are steppe pine forests with undergrowth from the steppe shrubs (caragana, peashrub, broom, almonds, spirea) and typical steppe species in the grass layer (feather grass). On the southern slopes of the mountains steppe upland oak forests are found with a predominance of steppe shrubs in the undergrowth.
Oak-linden and linden forests with mountain maple and elm in the second layer, hazel and euonymus in the undergrowth and forest herbs are common on the plateau (common louse, hairy sedge, European hoofed grass). Aspen-birch forests are of secondary origin and arose on the sites of indigenous linden and oak-linden forests.
Stony steppes are a peculiar type of mountainous xerophytic vegetation. Their communities are very diverse, the species-edificators among them are Zhiguli thyme, silky and Marshall wormwood, Zhiguli euphorbia, monolith frostweed, Lena and barefoot alyssum, feather grass.
The gentle slopes of the gulches and plateaus are occupied by upland meadows, which are characterized by rich motley grass, and meadow steppes, where feathery and Lessing feather grasses dominate, stepped sage. On the Volga slopes and along the slopes of wide gulches, plots of shrubby steppes with golden chain, steppe cherries occur. Near forest edges, meadow-steppe associations are developed.
In the floodplain, willows and sedges are common. Along the low ridges of the riverbed floodplain there are forests of elm with a sedge and silver poplar. In the undergrowth, wild rose is common, in the herbage – couch-grass, snakeroot. Floodplain meadows are represented by a variety of cereals, sedges, in motley grass – curled dock, medicinal comfrey, burnet, marsh purifier and others. In the center of Seredysh Island, on an elevated site, there is a mossy pine forest.
Overall, the vegetation cover of Samarskaya Luka and the Zhiguli Reserve is represented by a combination of typical and unique plant communities, which are indigenous and are characterized by high species and coenotic diversity (Chap and Saxonov, 1999).
