Version 1.1. Movhera - Hidroelétricas do Norte, S.A.. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/pa5t96 accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-14.Description
The dataset contains records of Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata, Aves) nests and observations of other cliff-nesting species of high conservation priority, collected in the lower valley of River Tua (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A., subsequently (2021) transferred to Movhera – Hidroelétricas do norte, S.A. This dataset includes results of nest surveys carried out at and around the area affected by the dam, from January 2021 to May 2023. Data consists of observations of all nests of the target species found in the two territories recorded in the study area, which were followed throughout the reproduction period (January-July) of each year. The records include the number of young produced by each couple in each year, if available. The target species was the Bonelli's Eagle (Aquila fasciata), but records were also kept of individuals of Griffon (Gyps fulvus), Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) and Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus). Due to the vulnerability of these species and their nest site locations, the precision of the geographic coordinates was degraded to 0.01, according to the recommendations of Chapman & Grafton (2008). The original (undegraded) coordinates dataset may be provided upon request by the resource contact from Movhera, who will define the terms and conditions for its use.
Purpose
This dataset is part of a broader initiative and commitment assumed by the company Movhera – Hidroelétricas do Norte S.A., which permits to make available biodiversity data collected from infrastructural impact assessments and biological monitoring studies in the scope of hydroelectric dams’ construction and exploitation.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
Data were collected in a 5-km buffer around the center of the two known territories of the Bonelli’s Eagle in the lower Tua valley (Castanheiro do Norte and Faro ridge), located 3 km (Castanheiro do Norte) and 30 km (Faro ridge) upstream the mouth of the river, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Vila Flor and Mirandela.Sampling
The dataset includes systematic observations of all nests detected in the breeding territories of Aquila fasciata in the lower Tua valley. Nest surveys and assessment of the likelihood of breeding usage (confirmed, probable or abandoned) were carried out in confirmed and potential nesting areas (according to adults behavior) close to nesting cliffs. Active nests were monitored each year until the mid of the breeding period (May), with the aim of determining the number of flying chicks for each detected couple. For each nest found records were taken of its occupation and conservation status, number of eggs, chicks and fledglings. The number and behaviour of each flying individual detected (perched, flying, in courtship or feeding chicks) were also recorded. Observations of other cliff-nesting species were also included. All identifications were made "in situ" with binoculars and telescope.Quality Control
