Description

In the beginning of 2020, Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation acquired a big nature area Søholt Storskov placed between the three largest lakes in the middle of the island of Lolland in the Southern Baltic Sea. The area of 1,134 ha comprises old and young deciduous forests, lakes and agricultural land. Map of the area: https://www.avjf.dk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Søholt-Storskov_Sort-afgrænsning.pdf Description in Danish: https://www.avjf.dk/avjnf/naturomraader/soeholt-storskov/ The foundations goal is to preserve and improve the nature values and biodiversity in the area. Prior to the planned nature restoration activities, Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation initiated a baseline monitoring programme for the biodiversity in Søholt Storskov. Bat survey conducted by Thomas W. Johansen and Hans Baagøe was a part of this programme.

Sampling

The whole area of Søholt Storskov was devided in four survey areas. Search for bats using a handheld bat detector was a supplement to another study, using stationary automatic detectors. The survey was carried out walking along subjectively selected routes, one in each survey area. The routes were designed based on our previous experience in the areas. Each route was walked once: Area 1: the night between June 24th and 25th 2020; Area 2: the night between July 12th and 13th 2020; Area 3: the night between June 25th and 26th 2020; Area 4: the night between July 13th and 14th 2020. The duration of each survey was 3-4 hours beginning at sunset. The number of individuals was estimated using four categories (1, 1-5, 6-15 and <15). The method is described in the Technical instruction A04 for the Danish monitoring programme NOVANA (Søgaard et al, 2018). Reference: Søgaard, B., Elmeros, M. & Baagøe, H.J. 2018.
