Prime Hoverfly (Insecta: Diptera: Syrphidae) Areas (PHA) as a conservation tool in Serbia

Description

This data base is used to identify core areas for conservation of hoverflies, named Prime Hoverfly Areas (PHA)

Purpose

The data set was developed using long-term hoverfly monitoring data in order to report on their prevalence in Serbia and present spatial priorities for their conservation

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The sampling is done covering the whole Serbia, annualy for 35 years

Sampling

Sampling has been done using hand net and adult specimens were collected during peak flight period of the species expected for the area.

Quality Control

The sampling was carefully planned respecting all the criteria for the samples to be representative. The samples were appropriately deposited at the Department of Biology and Ecology, University of Novi Sad. The determination of the specimens was done by expert.

Method steps

  1. 1. Sampling method - it requires knowledge of species distribution and ecology (habitat preference etc.). The specimens were sampled using hand net and adequatelly stored after field work (low temperature 5°C). 2. Species determination, done by expert taxonimist 3. The specimens are stored in insect boxes and the data on their taxonomy and locality are inserted in the data base.

Additional info

The data set will be published in Journal of Insect Conservation, titled: "Prime Hoverfly (Insecta: Diptera: Syrphidae) Areas (PHA) as a conservation tool in Serbia"
