Description

This dataset was published by ARCOS Network as part of its project to assess ecological integrity of Rwanda's wetlands

Purpose

The purpose of this dataset was to gather wetland biodiversity data and use it for producing evidence based communication tools that can inform decision making on wetland management in Rwanda

Sampling Description

Study Extent

We have covered different taxa namely, aquatic macroinvertebrates studied to the family level, and used to assess water quality in different wetlands, birds, butterflies and dragonflies as well as wetland vegetation. we have assessed level of threats to the wetlands.

Sampling

The rapid assessment of the mentioned taxa has followed the Framework for Wetland Ecological Integrity Assessment for Rwanda developed by ARCOS that considers both wetland mapping to study wetland cover change over time and the impact it has on wetland biodiversity. species richness and abundance was measured and water quality measured using different indices through the assessment of aquatic macroinvertebrates.

Quality Control

For the team to have good data, the methodology was discussed first before the team goes to the field, all materials were prepared in advance, and all data collected was inserted into an excel file and submitted to ARCOS office for review and cleaning following DWCA standards. GPS points were projected first to check the accuracy

Method steps

  1. After data cleaning to ensure quality, completeness, and value, we have saved our file as CSV and exported the file on the IPT by choosing the right file. We have then completed the metadata and published the file as a public document and then registered it on GBIF and completed the citation.

Additional info

Rapid assessment phase was completed and we are now entering the phase for full wetland assessment

Taxonomic Coverages

Geographic Coverages

The assessment has covered different wetland complexes including Rweru-Mugesera, Akanyaru, Muvumba, Rugezi,Rusizi Kirehe East and Southern part and the City of Kigali wetland complexes
