APLORI Bird Ringing Data from Cross River State, Nigeria

Description

The study area is a low-land forest with an elevation of about 130 m. The area is bounded on the eastern side by the Obudu Plateau in south-east Nigeria (South West [6.438183, 8.924245], North East [6.678505, 9.168897]). As at the time of this survey, most of the forest was intact. However, timber extract was carried out in some parts of the forest. The mist-netting survey lasted between 10th of September 2005 and 16th of March 2016. A total of 2086 individuals of 93 species of birds were recorded.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

This dataset was collected in forest patches in Becheve community of Cross River State, Nigeria. The survey lasted from 10th of September 2005 to 16th of March 2016. The habitat is a low-land forest at an elevation of about 250 m above sea level. The temperature of the area ranges from 65oF to 89oF, with rainfall of between 0.1 to 11.2 inches- falling for average of 9.6 months per year.

Sampling

Mist nets were mounted randomly within Becheve community of Cross River State of Nigeria. The nets were opened at 0600 and closed at 1000. Net rounds were carried out every 30 minutes after the nets were opened. Captured birds were ringed following the South African Ringing Scheme. Birds were identified to species level, aged, sexed and morphometrics were taken (wing length, weight, pectoral muscle score, fat score, brood patch, moult). The data were formatted according to the Darwin Core Standard before publishing through the IPT account at the A.P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI).

Quality Control
