The Zuid River Expedition was carried between February 6th and 19th 1988, with the main purpose to investigate the ecology of caimans in the area. However, during the expeditions fish, amphibians and reptiles were also collected. The team consisted of Paul Ouboter (expedition leader, herpetologist), Jan Mol (ichthyologist) and Jan Toto (preparator). The base camp was established at Kayser Airstrip. Habitats: Zuid river is a clear water river with many rapids and the shore vegetation is principally Tropical Rainforest. However, some small savannas occur east of the airstrip as well.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The Zuid River area was sampled once.Sampling
The sampling methods were specific to the taxonomic groups and included transect walks, hand sampling and seining.Quality Control
In some cases the identification of specimens was rechecked by foreign experts.Method steps
- Amphibians and reptiles were collected using line transects during night and day surveys and were collected by hand when encountered; Insects were collected using various methods (insect traps, active sampling). Fishes were collected using gill nets and seining. 2. The specimens were labeled in the field and after identification a collection number was assigned to each specimen. 3. The specimens were first preserved in formaldehyde and then transferred into 70% Ethanol (fishes), while insects were preserved in 90% Ethanol. 4. All specimens were identified to species using literature and identification keys.
