Otters are found throughout the River Dee catchment from the mouth of the River Dee to many of the high-altitude lochs in the Grampian mountains. Key habitats include small streams, mires and marshes, for both foraging and breeding. Otters can move over long stretches of the River Dee and its tributaries.

Quality Control
J.W.H.Conroy, recognised otter expert, was commissioned to undertake the work. Grid references for historic records have been corrected for errors introduced during data processing.Method steps
- Literature Review & Field Survey. A compilation of ad-hoc records (mainly road casualties) from the 1980s & 1990s was followed by partial field survey for tracks/signs in October 2000.
