Effect of tree stand composition on diversity of springtails (Collembola), small arthropods inhabiting forest litter and soil, was studied. Collembola communities in coniferous, mixed and broad-leaved forests were compared using a multi-scale sampling design. The material was collected in 2017 (June 7, and 13, September 30, October 2), on the territory of two protected areas of Moscow and the Moscow region (Valuevsky Forest Park and Losiny Ostrov), the European part of Russia. Data on 7639 specimens of 53 species in 972 soil cores (12 sampling series) are presented. The data analysis results were published in (Vasenkova, Kuznetsova, 2021).
Sampling Description
Study Extent
Information on number of individuals of springtail species in soil cores collected spruce, mixed and broad-leaved forests of two protected areas of Moscow and the Moscow region (Valuevsky Forest Park and Losiny Ostrov). A multi-scale sampling design. The material was collected in June 7 and October 2, 2017. Data on 7639 specimens of 53 species in 972 soil samples (12 accounting series). The material was collected and identified by Nadezhda Vasenkova and Natalia Kuznetsova.Sampling
A corer of 8 sq. cm was used. Soil was investigated up to 15 cm. 81 cores were taken in each field when sampling. Cores were placed in the corners of different-scale equilateral triangles inscribed in squares with sides 10 cm, 25 cm, 1 m and 10 m. The different-scale triangles were designed following the principles of fractal geometry.Quality Control
Keys by Babenko et al. (1994); Fjellberg (1998, 2007), Potapov (2002) and particular taxonomic articles were used for species identification. Experts on different families of springtails were consulted.Method steps
- A multi-scale sampling design is used to study the structure of biodiversity (Lande, 1996), communities, and populations at different spatial scales (Azovsky et al., 2000). Fractal arrangement of cores saves sample effort because the same core is used for analysis at different scales (Marsh, Ewers, 2013). The approach is common in hydrobiology, entomology, etc. but it continues to be rare in soil zoology (Tsyganov et al, 2014; Bolger et al, 2014; Kuznetsova, Saraeva, 2018). The small size of the cores (8 sq.cm) was used due to the special attention of diversity and spatial structure of population at the micro level. The sample design is described in detail by Saraeva et al. (2015). Collembola were extracted into 70% alcohol using Tullgren funnels, the material was mounted on slides in Phoera liquid according to a standard procedure (Гиляров, 1975; Потапов, Кузнецова, 2011). Springtails were identified to species level using a microscope and taxonomic keys (Fjellberg, 1980). The determinations were corrected using modern keys (Fjellberg, 1998, 2007, Potapov, 2002) and some taxonomic papers. Data on species were digitized, standardized, the quality of data was checked and errors were corrected, and then published.
