Department of Hydrobiology, University of Pécs. Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/qen9u7 accessed via GBIF.org on 2025-06-25.

Description

Aquatic macroinvertebrates were sampled in one-year long period from 60 sites in three European stream catchments. The aim of the survey was to contribute to the knowledge on the fauna of less known areas and fill the gaps in the distribution maps of the species. Individuals of macroinvertebrates from 13 higher taxonomic groups (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Architaenioglossa, Ectobranchia, Ellobiida, Hygrophila, Littorinimorpha, Stylommatophora; Annelida: Clitellata: Arhynchobdellida, Rhynchobdellida; Insecta: Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Megaloptera, Odonata, Trichoptera) were identified at species level in most cases, and at genus level for six taxa where species are not distinguishable due to taxonomic difficulties. The dataset contains 1827 occurrence records of 164 taxa.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The dataset is based on a one-year-long study surveying different catchment areas within Europe: Bükkösdi-víz in Hungary (25 sites), Butižnica River in Croatia (15 sites), and Velička River in Czechia (20 sites). In total the dataset contains 1827 occurrence data from 60 sampling locations in three European countries. Data are related to stream networks.

Sampling

The dataset contains records derived from samples taken using quantitative multihabitat sampling methods. Macroinvertebrates were collected using Surber samplers equipped with 500-micrometre mesh nets, along stream stretch with a length of 50–150 meter (depending on the mean wetted width of the stream/pools), covering 0.5–1.5 m2 area in flowing conditions and 0.1–0.5 m2 area when only pools were present. Samples underwent a pre-sorting process in the field and specimens of the recognizable protected species were replaced into the water after identification.

Quality Control

Quality control for geographic data: Reliability of coordinates was checked in Google maps to identify the correctness of sites. Quality control for taxonomic data: Professional experience of experts was applied as quality controls on dataset. Nomenclature validation was based on the GBIF taxonomic backbone.
