The purpose of this study was to look at the vertical distribution of all major species of zooplankton in Baffin Bay and Davis Strait, with particular emphasis on chaetognaths and copepods (Calanus species and their copepodites in particular) using fine-scale biological samples and simultaneous temperature and salinity data. This collection includes data collected during two Hudson cruises, one between July 29 to August 3, 1980 and the second between August 7 to August 14, 1983 Plankton samples were collected using the BIONESS sampler equipped with 243u mesh nets. Profiles were from the bottom to the surface. The samples collected were preserved in 4% formaldehyde and later analysed down to species for Copepoda and genus for all other classes and phyla. A wet weight for each group was also measured. Associated chlorophyll, phaeophytin and nutrient data are available.Sampling Description
Study Extent
The purpose of this study was to look at the vertical distribution of all major species of zooplankton in Baffin Bay and Davis Strait, with particular emphasis on chaetognaths and copepods (Calanus species and their copepodites in particular) using fine-scale biological samples and simultaneous temperature and salinity data. This collection includes data collected during two Hudson cruises, one between July 29 to August 3, 1980 and the second between August 7 to August 14, 1983.Sampling
Plankton samples were collected using the BIONESS sampler equipped with 243u mesh nets. Profiles were from the bottom to the surface. The samples collected were preserved in 4% formaldehyde and later analysed down to species for Copepoda and genus for all other classes and phyla. A wet weight for each group was also measured. Associated chlorophyll, phaeophytin and nutrient data are available.Quality Control
Scientific names listed in the BioChem database species list have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) using their online taxon match tool. Names not contained in WoRMS have been mapped to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS). The respective codes (WoRMS AphiaID and ITIS TSN) have been included as LSIDs in the occurrence record DwC field scientificNameID. All sampling locations were plotted on a map to perform a visual check confirming that the latitude and longitude coordinates were within the described sampling area.Method steps
- Version 1 of this resource was created for OBIS Canada. Darwin Core (DwC) records were extracted from the BioChem database in the required IPT format. Abundance information is included in this dataset and the numbers per cubic metre are recorded in the DwC field individualcount. The dynamicProperties field in the DwC record contains information on the standardized samplesize (Numbers per cubic metre), classification (WoRMS or ITIS) and the data provider's assigned taxon name(Verbatim name). The original data records are archived in the Fisheries and Oceans national BioChem database (series identifier='xxxxx'). See external links to access the BioChem website for more information on the database and instructions on how to extract the source data.
- The current version is based on an extract from the OBIS database accessed on 2017-11-07. The downloaded csv file was uploaded to the IPT and terms mapped to DwC. A number of default values were added.
