This is the Nova Scotia Museum database for marine organisms, including birds, mammals, and fishes. It contains mostly Nova Scotia material but there is also representation from New Brunswick, Newfoundland, the Northwest Territories, and other parts of North America. The ichthyology collection is the most extensive with over 2800 specimens. Temporally, specimens were collected from 1873 to 2002. The dataset was developed from the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History (NSMNH) - Museum Information Management System (MIMS) as an electronic catalogue of specimen and collecting information. This resource contains only the georeferenced records.Purpose
These data are for display on the OBIS portal and associated mapping programs and for download to personal computers for ad-hoc end-user analysis.

Study Extent
This is the Nova Scotia Museum database for marine organisms, including birds, mammals, and fishes. It contains mostly Nova Scotia material but there is also representation from New Brunswick, Newfoundland, the Northwest Territories, and other parts of North America. The ichthyology collection is the most extensive with over 2800 specimens. Temporally, specimens were collected from 1873 to 2002.Sampling
The dataset was developed from the Nova Scotia Museum (NSM/NSMNH) - Museum Information Management System (MIMS) as an electronic catalogue of specimen and collecting information.Quality Control
Specimen identifications are accurate and data are reasonably accurate. All relevant georeferenced records in the museum database are included. Records with locality data only were assigned georeference coordinates using the Canada Gazetteer (http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca) and the Atlas of Canada (http://atlas.gc.ca ).Method steps
- This resource was created by the data provider for OBIS Canada. Records were downloaded from the source database and and an OBIS view of the collection was created. DwC fields were populated after consultation between the resource creator and the OBIS Canada data management team.
- Version 1: The original resource was submitted to OBIS Canada as part of the Census of Marine Life project. Version 2: In 2014 this resource was removed from the OBIS Canada DiGIR server and copied to the OBIS Canada IPT. Version 3: In 2015 a number of records were georeferenced and then appended to the previous version of this resource. This version of the resource was created by the museum in collaboration with the OBIS Canada data management team and the Atlantic Coastal Zone Information Steering Committee (ACZISC) as part of the Atlantic Ecosystem Initiative (AEI) funded project “Atlantic Canada’s Biological Data for Ecosystem Planning and Decision-making”. Acknowledgements: Thanks to the Ian Foley for assisting with this project.
