Description

La reserva ecológica de San Felipe Bacalar esta considerada dentro de las Regiones Prioritarias para la Conservación como parte de "Zonas Forestales de Quintana Roo", esta zona fue decretada como reserva después de haber sufrido un serio deterioro, al ser extraídos la mayoría de los árboles maderables por lo que, actualmente es una zona en franca recuperación. Hoy se aprecia fauna mayor como mono araña, pécari, venado, coatí o tejón, y una gran variedad de aves y reptiles. Existe caoba de hasta 80 cm. de diámetro, la vegetación es de selva mediana subperennifolia. La Reserva presenta cuatro áreas perfectamente bien diferenciadas: la selva, el jardín botánico, la zona inundable y el área de manejo o área habitable de la reserva (Estación). El objetivo del proyecto consistió en determinar como está estructurada la comunidad de hormigas de esta reserva, para lograrlo se muestrearon éstas áreas cuatro veces a lo largo de un año y se encontró una marcada diferencia de abundancia de especies, siendo la selva la que presentó el mayor número de especies, con la mayor cifra de especies exclusivas; el área habitable presentó el número menor de especies y se presentaron las especies típicas que acompañan al hombre. Se ha formado un banco de datos con las especies encontradas en la Reserva de San Felipe Bacalar, además de otras colectadas en zonas aledañas. Gracias a esto y a los antecedentes revisados, podemos afirmar que Quintana Roo es el segundo estado de la República con más especies de hormigas registradas. En esta zona se encuentra la distribución más septentrional de muchas especies conocidas sólo para Centro y Sudamérica.
