Diversidad bentónica de la laguna Celestún, Yucatán

El presente proyecto incide en el área del conocimiento del bentos estuarino. Su objetivo es determinar, durante un ciclo anual, la composición, distribución y abundancia de la macro y meiofauna bentónica de la laguna costera Celestún. La información generada por este proyecto permite, además de caracterizar la biodiversidad de los grupos faunísticos más abundantes de la laguna, sentar las bases para la identificación de aspectos científicos relevantes, objeto de futuros estudios, tendientes a elucidar los procesos y mecanismos que regulan la dinámica de este ambiente lagunar. Como uno de los resultados importantes obtenidos dentro de este proyecto está la creación de una base de datos de los principales grupos de la fauna bentónica de Celestún, con un total de 1881 registros de organismos y la ubicación de éstos dentro de colecciones de referencia, las cuales contienen hasta ahora, 78 familias, 132 géneros y 125 especies correspondientes a los grupos Nematoda, Mollusca, Isopoda, Tanaidacea, Amphipoda, Polychaeta, Misidacea y Peces. El número total de muestras colectadas a lo largo del gradiente estuarino para el estudio de la macrofauna durante el proyecto, ascendió a 144 de las cuales se han determinado aproximadamente 3,000 especímenes de varios grupos. El número de muestras obtenidas para el estudio de la meiofauna, ascendió a 1,440, lo que representa un total de 216,000 nemátodos por identificar tanto a nivel de género como de especie. Hasta ahora se han determinado a nivel de género 72,000 nemátodos de 480 muestras.
En la actualidad se están determinando la composición taxonómica de la macro y meiofauna bentónica de la laguna; la riqueza, dominancia y abundancias relativas de las especies y grupos que integran la fauna bentónica y los cambios estaciónales en la composición, abundancia y distribución de las poblaciones bentónicas.
