Description

Kikuchi minnow (Aphyocypris kikuchii) is an endemic freshwater fish distributing in the eastern Taiwan, but it faces the threat of abundance declining and distribution range decreasing. Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation promotes Green Conservation of rice fields in Nan’an, Zhuoxi Township, Hualien County, and stumbled on Kikuchi minnow in 2016. The purpose of this survey is to understand the abundance and distribution of Kikuchi minnow and the relationship with the environment of paddy fields. The survey started from March 2017 to December 2018, and conducted twice a month with fish cages. This survey has obtained 572 records from 7 monitoring sites.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The survey started from March 2017 to December 2018, and conducted twice a month. Survey time period included morning and afternoon. Each site set up 2 fish cages with self-made bait, but sometimes only 1 cage was placed due to the limitation of water depth. Retrieved after 10 to 30 minutes, all captured individuals were measured for body length, total length and weight and returned to original places. Due to factors such as climate, personnel and survey adjustments, only 1 survey was conducted in May and November 2018, and 3 surveys were conducted in October 2017 and January 2018.

Sampling

Set up 7 monitoring sites: 1. Channel: beside the No. 30 Provincial Road, is a concrete structure 2. FarmDitch: in a grit chamber, the water is about 20 cm deep 3. FarmPond: a pond formed of irrigation water, the water is about 1 m deep 4. ChannelGate: downstream of the Channel (#1), the water flow can be controlled by the gate 5. EndPond: at the end of soil ditch 6. ArtificialPool: excavated manually in January 2018, the pool is about 3.4 m long and 1.7 m wide, and the water depth is about 30 cm 7. Gate: an area that ChannelGate (#4) passing through the culvert of the provincial road, is a natural soil ditch

Quality Control

The survey was conducted by the same surveyor, using the same fish cages (21cm23cm46cm). Recorded date, location, survey period in survey record form. If captured uncertain species, took pictures and confirmed by other experts later.

Method steps

  1. 1. Each site set up 2 fish cages with self-made bait, but sometimes only 1 cage was placed due to the limitation of water depth. 2. Depending on the area and water depth, retrieved fish cages for 10 to 30 minutes. 3. All captured individuals were measured for body length, total length and weight and returned to original places. 1.

Taxonomic Coverages

Fish. Mainly are Kikuchi minnow, but all species in fish cages are recorded.
