Description

DNA barcodes generated for taxa occurring in herbaceous layer of grassy biomes,

Sampling Description

Study Extent

"1. Extensive field work in the Drakensberg and sub-escarpment more specifically, Mucina and Rutherford bioregions Gd and Gs respectively. Collection of existing herbarium specimens at the following herbaria UKZN (for Drakensberg forbs) and the University Botanic Garden of Roma, Lesotho (for high altitude climate controlled grassland forbs). Rhynchosia, Indigofera, Tephrosia, Eriosema, Syncolostemon, Rotheca, Gnidia, Pentanisia, Pygmaeothamnus, Fadogia, Anthospermum, Vernonia sensu lato, Euryops, Senecio, Clutia, Acalypha, Euphorbia, Leucospermum. For every new collection a herbarium voucher will be prepared and deposited at JRAU (University of Johannesburg herbarium) and NU (The Bews Herbarium, University of Kwazulu-Natal). General DNA Barcoding sampling protocols will be followed. For each collection we will assemble; taxonomic species identification by experts, photographic illustrations, GPS coordinates, collection record, herbarium voucher specimen, and silica dried DNA tissue material. "

Sampling

Whole plants

Quality Control

QGIS was used to confirm the GPS coordinates.

Method steps

  1. Whole plants

Taxonomic Coverages

Forbs are one of the life forms adapted to fire maintained grassy biomes, their assembly pattern and evolutionary history will be investigated.
  1. Magnoliophyta
    common name: Forbs rank: phylum
