Spiders and dytiscids from fens in Eastern Québec

Description

Data collected in four (4) pristine fens (minerotrophic peatlands) and a restored fen in Eastern Québec, Canada, in the context of a master's degree project.

Purpose

Specimens were collected in the context of a master degree project. The project's aim was to compare recolonizing arthropods in a restored fen to arthropod communities in pristine fens. The resulting thesis can be found here: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/349088149_Recolonisation_des_mares_d'un_fen_en_restauration_par_les_araignees_et_les_dytiques?sg=fqK3ThUoR-cKHfR62UIXmxSf-YGVgOgHafb7SzpmBJg1X1h2UNDLS2TxODLjZK1T9ZTP4wSWbzDyW_DmbZfgSuYtE96-gU3pnbO4Eqf.IJ1G5fAZz5pxh2DH2Dc6zM63CRyGucUh2JBIyFgvM-sgYGo-o4Odh0M-Py3_O9c-Dedkjs-l8O7I6ZAvUtE16A or here: https://www.gret-perg.ulaval.ca/no_cache/fr/publications-du-gret/?tx_centrerecherche_pi1[showUid]=6264

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Sampling took place during summer of 2013 and 2014 in a restored fen and four pristine fens in the Lower Saint-Lawrence (Bas-Saint-Laurent) region, Québec, Canada. We used pitfall traps to sample ground-dwelling spiders and minnow traps to sample dytiscid beetles.

Sampling

Sampling took place during summer of 2013 and 2014 in a restored fen and four pristine fens in the Lower Saint-Lawrence (Bas-Saint-Laurent) region, Québec, Canada. We used pitfall traps to sample ground-dwelling spiders and minnow traps to sample dytiscid beetles.

Quality Control

Adult spiders were stored in 70% ethanol and identified to species based on Paquin & Dupérré (2003) and Dondale & Redner (1978, 1982, 1990, 1994).

Method steps

  1. Pitfall traps were partly filled with water, propylene glycol and detergent, and were emptied once a week. Adult spiders were stored in 70% ethanol and identified to species based on Paquin & Dupérré (2003) and Dondale & Redner (1978, 1982, 1990, 1994). Dytiscid and spider specimens were deposited at the Montreal Insectarium.

Taxonomic Coverages

  1. Araneae
    common name: Spiders rank: order
  2. Dytiscidae
common name: Predacious diving beetles rank: family

Geographic Coverages

Five fens in the Bas-Saint-Laurent Region (Québec).
