This dataset is part of a broader compilation named 'Standardized datasets of Brazilian reef diversity in space and time' created from a research network of reef scientists within several projects and collaborations and finally gathered and published by the ReefSYN group. This dataset, used by Longo et al. (2019) and Inagaki et al. (2020), includes records of feeding behavior of fish over the benthic communities, as well as interactions among fish. Study Extent
Fish feeding pressure was assessed on the benthos in 15 locations across 61° of latitude (from 34°N to 27°S) comprising tropical and extratropical sites in both Hemispheres of the Western Atlantic during the summer of each Hemisphere between 2011 and 2014. Although we describe here the Brazilian Province subset, the complete dataset can be requested from AL Luza and GO Longo.Sampling
At each of the 15 locations, we sampled between two and six hard‐substrate sites separated by 0.5–90 km and at depths ranging from 1 to 25 m (but most in the 3–12 m range). At each site, we videoed replicated 2 m × 1 m areas positioned hap‐ hazardly on the reefs (5–40 samples per site) and separated from its nearest neighbour by 5–10 m.Quality Control
The name of all taxa was checked against the WoRMS database (World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS, 2022)), using the R package “worrms” (Chamberlain 2020). Thus, valid scientific names were called “scientificNameAccepted” following the DCS standard. The last checking was done on 23 October 2023, using the version 0.4.2 of ‘worrms’ R package.Method steps
- We evaluated 1,038 10 min videos, with a mean of c. 17 videos per site and approximately four sites per location. In each video, every fish feeding on the benthos was identified and had its total length estimated, and the number of bites on the reef substratum was counted (Longo et al., 2014). Feeding pressure was estimated as the product of the number of bites taken and the body mass (in kilograms) of the fish, obtained through length–weight rela‐ tionships from the literature (Froese & Pauly, 2016). The inclusion of fish biomass accounts for body size variation, per unit time and area [(Bites × kg)/(2 m2 × 10 min)]. Benthic cover estimates for each 2 m2 area videoed were obtained through visual assessments from the videos in association with five detailed pictures of the videoed area. Froese, R., & Pauly, D.
