Description

The first herbarium at the Central Siberian Botanical Garden, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (CSBG), was organized in 1946. Now there are two herbarium collections with their own acronyms and registrations in the Index Herbariorum: M.G. Popov Herbarium (NSK) and I.M. Krasnoborov Herbarium (NS). Approximately 800,000 herbarium specimens of higher vascular plants, mosses, lichens and fungi collected in Siberia, Russian Far East, Europe, Asia and North America are stored in NSK and NS.

Digitization of the higher vascular plants at 600 dpi was initiated in 2014 using a special scanner, Herbscan, starting with type specimens. In 2017 a new research group “USU-Herbarium” was organized in CSBG for the digitization and management of herbarium collections. Herbarium specimens are being digitized using three customized scanners: Herbscan and two ObjectScan 1600, according international standarts at 600 dpi, with barcode, 24-color scale and scale bar. Images and metadata are stored in the CSBG Database (http://84.237.85.99:8081) generated by ScanWizard Botany and MiVapp Botany software (Microtek, Taiwan).

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Approximately 800,000 herbarium specimens of higher vascular plants, mosses, lichens and fungi collected in Siberia, European part of Russia, Russian Far East, West Europe, Asia and North America are stored in NSK and NS.

Sampling

Herbarium specimens are being digitized using three customized scanners: Herbscan and two ObjectScan 1600, according international standarts at 600 dpi, with barcode, 24-color scale and scale bar. Images and metadata are stored in the CSBG Database (http://84.237.85.99:8081) generated by ScanWizard Botany and MiVapp Botany software (Microtek, Taiwan).

Quality Control

According to international standards

Method steps

  1. Images and metadata are stored in the CSBG Database (http://84.237.85.99:8081) generated by ScanWizard Botany and MiVapp Botany software (Microtek, Taiwan).

Additional info

Earlier the dataset "Family Primulaceae in Virtual Herbaria of CSBG SB RAS (NSK)" was published at https://www.gbif.org/dataset/1f61b310-0d25-498d-902a-97c28c5a110a . We transferred the dataset with metadata and added several specimens and links to images for all specimens on IPT of the CSBG SB RAS under the new name "Family Primulaceae in Digital Herbaria of CSBG SB RAS (NSK)".

Taxonomic Coverages

The family Primulaceae Batch. ex Bork was proposed as model object for the development of a scanning technique and the information entry into a virtual herbarium and the database of the Herbarium CSBG. In M.G. Popov's Herbarium (NSK) about 3000 herbarium specimens from 14 genera, 98 species and 9 subspecies are stored.
