Description

Since 2001, DiversityIndia has been a bustling online community for citizen scientists in India. It has multiple subgroups, each focussing on a particular taxon, one of which is ButterflyIndia. Since 2004, they have coordinated diverse taxa-based diversity documentation in India in partnership with Nature Mates. ButterflyIndia Meet 2008 held at Chakrata in Uttarakhand, India was the first time such a meet was organised in the Western Himalayas. Chakrata is situated in the Shivalik Range of the Western Himalayas. It lies between the Tons and Yamuna rivers, at an elevation of 2118 m, in the temperate broadleaf and mixed forest ecoregion. The evergreen broadleaf forest is dominated by oaks, while the understorey features a rich assemblage of ferns, mosses, and epiphytes. The drier areas and higher elevations also have conifers like Pine, Fir, Cedar and Spruce. The deciduous forests are found along rivers and consist of trees like Alder, Maple, Walnut, Elm, Poplar, etc. Given the floral diversity of the region, it is no surprise that it is also home to a wide array of butterfly species, including a number of endemic or near-endemic ones.

Study was done in and around Chakrata, Tiger Falls, Budher Cave, Deoban, Mussoorie Road and in transit between these places, during the post-monsoon season.
