EDP Foz Tua: Terrestrial Birds, Spring (point counts) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2011-2017]. Version 1.1. EDP. Sampling event dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/xge7yb accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-12.Description
The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2011) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the spring of 2011-2017 during field visits to 27 (2011) or 60 (>2012) sampling points with favourable habitats in 26 2x2 km squares within a 5-km radius buffer around the Tua valley, directly or indirectly affected by the Foz-Tua dam. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes.Purpose
This dataset is part of a broader initiative whereby the company EDP - Energias de Portugal S.A. will made available biodiversity data collected during impact assessment and biological monitoring studies.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 45 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça, Mirandela and Vila Flor.Sampling
Sampling was designed to cover the main habitats for terrestrial birds along the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam, including the future reservoir area. In the first year (2011), a total of 27 point counts distributed along the valley was used. From 2012 onwards, this number was increased to 60 points which were kept until the end of the monitoring period. In 2017, a partial renumeration took place, but the total number did not change. All plots were sampled once per spring and per year in the early morning or late afternoon. Each sampling event had 5 minutes of duration, in which all birds seen or heard in two bands of 50m around the point were recorded. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.Quality Control
All identifications were performed by qualified technicians.Method steps
