Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution. Version 1.5. A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES. Occurrence dataset https://doi.org/10.15468/kjted9 accessed via GBIF.org on 2024-12-15.Description
The dataset is based on the samples collected mainly by members of the Laboratory of the lower vertebrates behavior, Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russian Academy of Sciences. Information in the dataset is related to samples of anadromous and potamodromous sexually mature adults, as well as of seaward migrating postmetamorphic juveniles (lamprey smolts). Both data on ammocoetes and specimens with uncertain taxonomic status are not included into the dataset.Sampling Description
Study Extent
Geographic range - rivers of the Baltic sea drainage basins. Area – the European part of Russia. Freshwater ecoregion – Lake Onega – Lake Ladoga (FEOW ID 409), Southern Baltic Lowlands (FEOW ID 408), Central & Western Europe (FEOW ID 404).Sampling
Seaward migrants were sampled by cone nets; upstream migrants and mature adults by minnow traps, and fishing netsQuality Control
The dataset is based on the deposited in the collection of lamprey specimens. The taxonomic status was estimated according the key for lampreys (Renaud, 2011). Physical coordinates of sampling sites are obtained from GPS-navigators or from the Google maps.Method steps
- Gathered specimens and samples were preserved in formaldehyde (4%) or ethanol (genetic samples), delivered to the Institute of Ecology and evolution. Taxonomic status is estimated by basic external features (mainly dentition). Samples are labeled as IEE and numbered. The labels are stored in the local database “Lampreys of Russia”.
