INDEFOR manages the sea turtle project in Equatorial Guinea (called TOMAGE) under the tutelage of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests. Abstract: En asociación con un proyecto de biodiversidad marina regional, estamos estudiando los movimientos de las tortugas verdes en las zonas de alimentación en la bahía de Corisco, que incluye tanto las aguas de Guinea Ecuatorial como las de Gabón. Si bien ya hemos estado siguiendo las tortugas capturadas en Gabón desde marzo de 2010, hemos empezado la telemetría satelital de las tortugas verdes de Guinea Ecuatorial sólo desde enero 2011. El proyecto tiene como objetivo examinar los patrones de alimentación basados en el tamaño individual de las tortugas verdes de la bahía de Corisco. Estos datos de movimiento se integrarán con una caracterización transfronteriza de los hábitat locales y con una evaluación de las amenazas antropogénicas, en Gabón y en Guinea Ecuatorial. Los resultados del proyecto ayudarán a las organizaciones locales e internacionales en la protección de esta especie en peligro de extinción global.
In association with a regional marine biodiversity project, we are studying the movements of green turtles on their foraging grounds in Corisco Bay, which includes both Equato-Guinean and Gabonese waters. While we have been tracking turtles captured in Gabon since March 2010, satellite tracking of green turtles from Equatorial Guinea began only recently, in January 2011. The project aims to examine size-based foraging patterns of the Corisco Bay population of green turtles. These movement data will be integrated with a transborder characterization of the local habitat and an assessment of anthropogenic threats; some in Gabon, some in Equatorial Guinea. The results of the project will assist local and international organisations to protect this globally endangered species.
