Please, you should contact me if you think to use the present dataset (roberto.pizzolotto@unical.it).
Online datasets on Italian carabids need to be FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Re-usable) characterized. Information about the species biology, richness, and abundance often lies in hardcopy papers. The dataset included here is part of an initiative aimed at promoting the adoption of a formal structure for datasets on carabids acquired by field surveys, and to give open access to these data.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The dataset is the result of various collection campaigns carried out between 2008 and 2014, every year different locations were sampled leading to a total of 25 sampling sites. See Pizzolotto (2024) for a detailed descriptionSampling
Quantitative sampling was carried out at each sample site using an average of 6 pitfall traps. The traps were positioned by selecting an area that was as homogeneous as possible as regards the ecological characteristics of the sampled environment. These traps consist of a plastic glass of about 9 cm in diameter at the mouth and 7 cm at the base, about 11 cm high, containing a solution of commercial wine vinegar saturated with table salt. A small hole (0.5 cm in diameter) was made in each glass about 4 cm from the edge to prevent content overflow by any rainwater. Traps were buried up to the brim, spaced about 10 meters from each other, taking particular care to eliminate any empty space between the edge and the ground.Method steps
- In every sample site, traps were emptied and reactivated every 20 days, from the end of June to the end of August. In laboratory, the collected material was washed and cleaned from non carabids. Carabids were identified to species level.
Taxonomic Coverages
Carabid beetles are the subject of many studies covering the ecological, adaptation and taxonomic point of views. They are affected by the variation of biotic and abiotic factors at the regional, ecological landscape and continental scale, making them good model organisms. Several carabid species adapted to different ecosystems or ecological factors, so that they play the role of biological indicators

Geographic Coverages
The dataset is the result of a pitfall trapping survey of carabids living along an altitudinal bioclimatic gradient, in the Dolomites mountains within the protected area of the Regional Park "Paneveggio e Pale di S.Martino" (Trento, Italy). Sampled environments ranged from spruce forests to the extreme environments of high altitude, so to collect a dataset as complete as possible on carabids harboured in this area.
