Las islas mexicanas son sitios clave para la conservación de la biodiversidad nacional y global pues presentan un alto grado de endemismo en su flora y fauna. Representan hábitats que van desde lo desértico a lo tropical. Es por ello que la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza y el Consejo Internacional para la Preservación de las Aves consideran a nueve de las diez islas propuestas como áreas prioritarias para la conservación (IUCN, 2010). Si bien se han realizado algunos estudios limitados sobre la fauna de las islas, la información no es reciente o se limita a una especie particular. De ahí la necesidad de obtener un inventario actualizado de las especies de aves tanto marinas como terrestres, reptiles y crustáceos terrestres. Se plantea la presente propuesta para cubrir esa necesidad. El Grupo de Ecología y Conservación de Islas, A.C. (GECI) tiene varios años trabajando en las islas mexicanas y cuenta con información del estatus de la fauna nativa, lo cual facilitará la operación del proyecto. Falta corroborar especies, capturar e integrar la información generada a la fecha. Además, GECI cuenta con proyectos activos en todas las islas propuestas, lo cual facilita la logística y abarata mucho los costos. Se solicita a esa Comisión un monto de $439,600.00 (Cuatrocientos treinta y nueve mil seiscientos 00/100 pesos) para trabajar por un periodo de 12 meses. La propuesta incluye salidas de campo y trabajo de gabinete. El resultado final consistirá en una base de datos con el inventario de las aves, reptiles y crustáceos terrestres.
