The “Lamippidae - endoparasites of octocorals of the World” dataset is based on publications. These dataset contains information about records from around the world. As of Jule 24, 2019, dataset includes 264 records of 54 species of symbiotic copepods (11 genera, one family), inhabiting 42 species of invertebrates (33 genera, 20 families, two orders, one classes).
The dataset comprises information on host and symbiont taxonomy, references to unique records in the World of Copepods, the number of associates per host, the nature of the symbiosis, the names and coordinates of collection sites, the depths and dates of collections, as well as publication sources.
The dataset includes 61 collection sites around the world ocean. Collection sites apply to 22 countries. The largest number of records relates to the island of France – 36, USA – 16, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - 15. Most of the records (252 of 264 records) are geolocated. Please note that the precision of the coordinates depends on the detail of the geographic data marked in the articles, and the accuracy of the coordinates is indicated as a radius (uncertainty in meters) around the point.
The record date is noted in 115 occurrences.
Please provide a link to the original dataset when using these data.
Purpose
The few records about members of the Lamippidae family cover a wide spatial and temporal coverage, and many early publications are difficult to access. At the same time, the data published in recent years indicate that these copepods can influence the state of corals and, possibly, transmit diseases, thereby potentially having a high impact on the entire community of invertebrate coral reefs (Ho, 2001; Berkenbusch, Rowden 2003; Hatcher et al., 2012; Zeppilli at al., 2015, 2018). At the same time, the data published in recent years indicate that these copepods can influence the state of corals and, possibly, transmit pathogens of their diseases (Ho, 2001; Berkenbusch, Rowden 2003; Hatcher et al., 2012; Zeppilli at al., 2015, 2018). For this reason, it seems relevant to visualize the available literature data on the distribution of this family.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
A literature search was performed using Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Web of science. Information from 46 publications is included in the dataset.Sampling
The data was combined in Microsoft Access.Method steps
- We conducted a search for information in the literature.
- We added this data to the database.
- We checked the taxonomic names in the WoRMS database and changed the synonyms with the actual names.
- We added country codes and coordinates.
