Fish species occurrences in selected rivers in western Uganda

Description

This dataset presents the occurrence records of fish species collected in selected rivers in western Uganda. The fish were mostly collected during surveys conducted as part of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) associated with development projects such as hydro-electric dams operated or planned along the rivers.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The sampling covered rivers (Murchison Nile, Ndugutu, Sindlira, Ssebwe, Mubuku, Muzizi, and Nyamwamba)in Uganda. These were sampled in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The sampling was part of bigger environmental impact assessments, associated with development projects on the rivers such as hydro-electric power dams and oil development.

Sampling

Sampling was conducted using an electric fisher, overnight longline, hook nd line, active gillnetting, and minnor traps, set overnight.

Quality Control

All scientific names were validated basing FishBase (Froese & Paully, 2018).

Method steps

  1. Fish identification In the field, fish species were identified to the lowest taxon level possible. Unidentified specimens were preserved in 10% formalin and transferred for identification out of the field using taxonomic keys. Scientific names were validated based on FishBase (Froese & Paully, 2018).
