Bottom-moored short-term sediment trap arrays were deployed at 7 stations in three East Greenlandic fjords. The deployments were conducted in Dove Bay (1 station), Arden Caple fjord (3 stations) and Kong Oscar Fjord (3 stations) and lasted for 21.5-23.5 hours. After recovery, a subsample of 100 mL was collected from the sediment trap cylinders (KC Denmark, 72 mm inner diameter, aspect ratio: 6.25) deployed at the sampling depths 20, 30, 50, 90, and 120 (or 200) m. The samples were preserved with 2 mL acidic Lugol solution, stored cool (+4 C) and in darkness, until the microscopical analysis. From this field work, there are also other data available: 1) cruise track with a station list (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.953084, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.953083), 2) underway measurements (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.959027), 3) concentration of suspended chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, particulate organic carbon (POC), and particulate organic nitrogen (PON) (https://doi.org/10.11582/2024.00038), 4) downward flux of chlorophyll a, phaeophytin, particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), and the atomic ratio of POC:PON (https://doi.org/10.11582/2024.00040, and 5) the phytoplankton community composition in the water column (https://doi.org/10.15468/k4e2a5).Sampling Description
Study Extent
At each of the seven stations with a sediment trap deployment in East Greenland (1 station in Dove Bay, 3 stations in Kong Oscar Fjord, 3 stations in Arden Caple fjord), a bottom-moored short-term sediment trap array was deployed.Sampling
Gimballed frames with 2-4 transparent plexiglass sediment trap cylinders were attached to the sediment trap array at 6 to 8 sampling depths. The trap cylinders were pre-filled with filtered sea water and a salinity of approximate 40 psu before deployment. After recovery of the sediment trap array, the water from the trap cylinders deployed at the same sampling depth was transferred in one carboy. From this carboy, a subsample of 100 mL was taken and preserved with 2 mL of acidic Lugol solution, and the sample was stored cool (+4 C) and in darkness until further analysis ashore.Method steps
- The microscopic analysis was later conducted at the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) in Sopot, Poland and the phytoplankton taxa were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level.
