Description

The MRC Dataset is an occurrence dataset of preserved marine specimens that have been collected from various research projects over IMA's 45 years in existence. Most of the specimens were collected in Trinidad and Tobago's marine space. Some were collected in Venezuelan waters.

Purpose

Data was developed for it to be accessible to local and international persons for science and education.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The sampling locations have within the EEZ of Trinidad and Tobago and the waters off Venezuela.

Sampling

Various methods have been used to capture these specimens, trawling, cast net, hook and line, seine, and by hand.

Method steps

  1. Photos were taken of the Digitization of the Marine Reference Collection 1. Print and cut ID cards on waterproof paper. 2. Dry specimens in trays and using paper towels. 3. Prepare the work area to pin specimens down. 4. Place rulers both vertically and horizontally. 5. Pin the specimen down in the desired orientation. 6. Count/record the specimens present in each jar. 7. Photograph the whole specimen with identification. 8. Photograph the whole specimen with an Identification and description card. 9. Photograph close-up images for smaller specimens/distinguishable features/unique features etc. 10. Place the specimen back with ID and description card. *Use digital editing software such as Adobe Light Room, Sketchbook, or equivalent to edit/enhance/clean images. 11. Naming convention must follow: “IMA-MRC-ACT-“ORDER”-“FAMILY”-“1, 2, 3…”
