Description

In 2017 we surveyed the birds of the Botanic Garden to establish baseline data for long-term monitoring. On 18 days between January and June two transects were walked and all the birds recorded in a systematic manner.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The transects were contained within the park of Meise Botanic Garden, Meise, Belgium

Sampling

Two transects were selected being approximately parallel to one another follow paths within the Garden that pass through semi-natural woodland, lawns and the collections of the Garden. Both transects were about 650m long and they were further divided into three (eastern transect) or four (western transect) sub-transects. Using the BTO Recording Sheets all birds all birds were recorded on the route while walking slowly. The BTO provides bird codes to make recording simpler. All birds were recorded to the side of the route. Birds behind the observer at the start of a transect of in front of the observer at the beginning were ignored. Duplicate counting of birds was avoided. For flying birds, if they were flying right over head they were record within 25 meters (distance 1), otherwise I'd record above 100m (distance 3).
