Description

This is the OBIS extraction of the Atlantic Cooperative Telemetry and Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) SERC Cownose Ray Study, consisting of the release tagging metadata, i.e. the location and date when the tagged animal was released, and summarized detection events of tagged individuals. If readers are interested in the source dataset they may also inquire with the project PIs as listed here or on the OTN web site (https://members.oceantrack.org/project?ccode=ACT.CBCNR).

Abstract:The Cownose Ray is an ecologically important batoid ray in coastal areas of the western North Atlantic. This study seeks to identify patterns in habitat use throughout the annual migration along the US Atlantic Coast.

Purpose

These data are for display on the OBIS portal and associated mapping programs and for download to personal computers for ad-hoc end-user analysis.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

Sampling

Acoustic tags released.

Quality Control

All species names are verified using the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). If species names on new data cannot be verified against (a) known valid names in ACT or OTN, and/or (b) WoRMS the Data Provider will be notified so they can check they are correct. Names that cannot be placed after checking with WoRMS are, where possible, placed on the basis of other authoritative sources, such as FishBase or ITIS; and once completely verified a request will be sent to WoRMS for addition of the verified species name. http://members.oceantrack.org/data/discovery/byspecies

Method steps

  1. This resource is curated by the Atlantic Cooperative Telemetry Data Centre, this archive was produced using software created by the Ocean Tracking Network to serve as a summarized representation of animal presence determined by electronic tagging efforts. Darwin Core (DwC) records were extracted from the ACT database and OTN-affiliated data systems, filtered and summarized according to international agreed-upon standards.
