The second version of the published dataset contains 264 relevés (descriptions of vegetation plots) in the habitats of Iris aphylla L. located in the European part of Russia. The dataset includes 14003 records indicating presence of a plant taxon (species or other) on a plot. Data are entered into GBIF for the first time in this dataset. 120 descriptions are published for the first time in GBIF. 144 descriptions have been published earlier on paper (Kovyly..., 2015; Averinova et al., 2021).Purpose
By publishing this dataset, we hope that it will be useful to researchers. As data accumulates, we intend to add them to this resource. We will be glad to cooperate with colleagues.
Sampling Description
Study Extent
The material was collected in the central part of the East European Plain. In this territory, the range of Iris aphylla covers the forest-steppe belt, entering the south of the forest and north of the steppe zones (Kazakova et al., 2017, 2019). Most of the descriptions were made in typical habitats of I. aphylla (Kazakova et al., 2015) - meadow steppes, including areas with limestone outcrops, forest edges and groves, less often under the canopy of light forests. The material was collected in the central part of the East European Plain. The dataset includes plot descriptions compiled in Belgorodskaya Oblast' (meadow steppes sites in Gubkinskiy, Novooskol'skiy and Prokhorovskiy municipalities), Kurskaya Oblast' (meadow steppes in Streletskiy and Kazatskiy sections of Central Black Soil Biosphere Reserve, Zhuravlinaya Balka Site, as well as in Gorshechenskiy, Fatezhskiy, Manturovskiy, Medvenskiy, and Zolotukhinskiy municipalities), Lipetskaya Oblast' (Galichia Gora and Bykova Sheya Sections of Galichia Gora Reserve, Krutoe Nature Monument, Nizovia Reki Voronets Nature Monument), Moskovskaya Oblast' (Raznotravnyi lug k zapadu ot derevni Lamonovo Nature Monument), Republic of Mordovia (Kazhlodskie Sklony and Nikol'skie Sklony Sites), Orenburgskaya Oblast' (Buzulukskiy Bor National Park), Orlovskaya Oblast' (Gorodishche Gat' Archaeological Monument, Log Bogatoe, Kuzilinka Gully, Podmaslova Gora, Neprets Gully System, Krucha Site, Shakhovskaya Dubrava Sites, as well as in Dolzhanskiy, Kromskoy, Mtsenskiy, Novosil'skiy, Pokrovskiy municipalities), Penzenskaya Oblast' (Novozubovskaya Dubrava, Panikov Ovrag, and Podgornovskaya Balka Sites, the meadow in Belinskiy municipality), Ryazanskaya Oblast' (Miloslavskaya Lesostep Nature Preserve, Lesostepnaya Balka Kovylnia, Lubianskoe Gorodishche, Zavidovskiy Dolinnyi Kompleks, Balka Yugo-Zapadnee sela Poyarkovo, Novobokinskaya dubrava, Erlinskiy Les Nature Monuments, Sukhotinskaya Balka Site, another forest steppe site in Mikhailovskiy municipality), Tambovskaya Oblast' (Voroninskiy Reserve, Osinovyi Ovrag Nature Monument, a forest-steppe site in Pichaevskiy municipality).Sampling
We use standard methods of vegetation description (Lavrenko, 1938; Becking, 1957; Korchagin, 1964; Westhoff, van der Maarel, 1978; Rabotnov, 1983; Dengler et al., 2016) according to our tasks.Method steps
- The choice of the site is carried out according to information from scientific literature and herbarium collections. Plots for compilation of descriptions are established in such a way that Iris aphylla are present there. The size of the test plots in open areas is 10x10 m, under the forest canopy - 20x20 m. In rare cases, square plots cannot be established because of vegetation mosaic. Then we implemented plots of a different form, subject to the requirements for its area. Due to limited time, three of the plots was established on a smaller area - a biodiversity plot, 10 sq. m (Dengler et al., 2016) The size of the sites is specified in the dataset.
- The assessment of the plant abundance at the site is applied according to the Brown-Blanquet scale. We usually rated the coverage for each plant in points, but the two descriptions give coverage as a percentage. The presence of a slope is recorded, as well as in which part of the slope the Iris aphylla grows. Normally we also noted whether the plot was exposed to fire, and how much time has passed since the last burnout.

Geographic Coverages
Forest-steppe belt, including the south of the forest zone and the north of the steppe zone. The descripted vegetation plots are located in the European part of Russia within the catchment areas of the Volga and Don rivers and belong to the territories of the following entities of the Russian Federation: Belgorodskaya Oblast’, Kurskaya Oblast’, Lipetskaya Oblast’, Republic of Mordovia, Moskovskaya Oblast’, Orenburgskaya Oblast’, Orlovskaya Oblast’, Penzenskaya Oblast’, Ryazanskaya Oblast’, Tambovskaya Oblast’.
