Winter limonid mosquitoes (Diptera: LimoniidaeI)

Description

The genus of the limoniid micropore mosquito Chionea Dalman, 1816 has 38 species and subspecies and has a typical Holarctic distribution. In the fauna of the Palaearctic region, this genus is represented by two subgenus: Chionea Dalman, 1816 and Sphaeconophilus Becker, 1912, and 20 species and subspecies. For the fauna of Russia, 5 species were previously indicated; the species Chionea (Ch.) Crassipes Boheman, 1846 is represented by three subspecies (Oosterbroek, 2016). As a rule, mosquitoes of this genus found in the cold season and do not reach high numbers. Mosquitoes are clearly visible mainly in the snow and usually only a few individuals, therefore, even in large collections, they are represented by single specimens. Thus, information about mosquitoes of this genus in Russia is scattered and fragmentory (Pilipenko, at all, 2016). (Pilipenko, at all, 2016).

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The collection of Chionea crassipes was carried out by hand from the surface of the snow cover on February 19-28, 2018 in the vicinity of the village of Yugan.
