Description

We conducted a one-year waterbird survey in the Tiaozini wetland during 2020-2021, and provided an occurrence dataset with detailed species and geographic information.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The Tiaozini wetland waterbirds survey was conducted monthly from July 2020 to June 2021, and the scope of this survey is: 32.76N to 32.85N Latitude; 120.90E to 120.95E Longitude.

Sampling

We used sampling points method to investigate species composition and individual quantity of waterbirds in Tiaozini wetland.

Method steps

  1. After the pre-survey fieldwork, we had set up 55 observation points with an interval of about 1km. Our survey was conducted in a sunny and windless day, and the survey time was selected during the high tide period. While fieldwork, waterbird researchers searched for and recorded the species and numbers of waterbirds within a radius of about 500m around the observation point by using Shuntu 8x42 binoculars, Nikon 10x60 monoculars and Canon 6D2 camera. The stay time of each observation point is about 4min. In order to save time and avoid double counting, the survey was conducted simultaneously in different areas of the Tiaozini wetland by 3 groups of experienced researchers (2 researchers in each group), only the waterbirds that stayed in and flew into the observation area were recorded, and the waterbirds that flew out of the observation area were not recorded. When the number of waterbirds is small, we directly recorded the species and quantity of waterbirds; When the number of waterbirds is large, we used the method of photographing before identification to recorded the species and quantity of waterbirds.

Taxonomic Coverages

A total of 51231 water birds were recorded in this occurrence dataset, belonging to 104 species, 16 families and 9 orders
  1. Aves
