RAVON (NL) - Fish observations extracted from historic reports 1860-1907

Description

At the large fish markets fish landings of the important migratory fish species (Atlantic sturgeon, Atlantic salmon, seatrout and allis shad) on the large rivers and coastal waters were reported weekly, monthly and/or anually in the period 1860-1907. Data were digitalized into a database from the historic reports.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

On the large rivers mainly large seine nets (zegen), fyke nets (zalmsteek) and drift nets (gill nets) were used to catch migratory species. On the Wadden Sea migratory species were mainly a by-catch of other fisheries.

Sampling

Large seine nets, fyke nets and drift nets (gill nets) used by commercial fishermen

Method steps

  1. Fish landed by fisherman were sold at fish markets. The numbers (and sometimes weight) of fish were registered and reported. The reported data was digitalized into this database, with the location of the fish market and its indicative geographic coördinates.

Taxonomic Coverages

Most important migratory species for commercial fisheries. These species all became extinct in the 20th century due to over fishing, pollution and river regulation.
