Description

The Foreign Asia herbarium collection in CSBG (NS) is digitized. This is our first experience of digitizing by using floristic rather than systematic principle. The total number of herbarium samples are 4794. Herbarium materials from 11 countries are presented: Mongolia (3211), China (759), Japan (661), Turkey(75), India (35), South Korea (16), Iran (17), Afghanistan (6), Taiwan (6), Syria (5), Philippines (3). The dataset excludes specimens from the territory of ex-USSR (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan).

Purpose

Our aim is to provide online access to CSBG SB RAS herbarium collections as a worldwide resource for biodiversity study.

Sampling Description

Study Extent

The Foreign Asia herbarium collection in CSBG (NS) is digitized. This is our first experience of digitizing by using floristic rather than systematic principle. The total number of herbarium samples are 4794. Herbarium materials from 12 countries are presented: Mongolia (3211), China (759), Japan (661), Turkey (75), India (35), South Korea (16), Iran (17), Afghanistan (6), Taiwan (6), Syria (5), Philippines (3). The dataset excludes specimens from the territory of ex-USSR (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan).

Sampling

Currently digitization of samples is carried out using two ObjectScan 1600 scanners. Each workstation consists of an ObjectScan 1600 scanner, ScanWizard_Botany software (reg. number I41-018966) and MiVapp_Botany archive management system (reg. number I41-018969) software (Microtek, Taiwan).

Quality Control

Specimens were scanned using international standards: with the resolution of 600 dpi, a barcode for each specimen, and a 24-color scale and scale.

Method steps

  1. Non-determined herbarium specimens were tested by taxonomy specialists: Han I.V., Kovtonyuk N.K., Shaulo D.N., Artemov I.A., Shekhovtsova I.N., Ankova T.V., Troshkina V.I., Doronkin V.M., Gatilova E.A., Banaev E.V., Baikov K.S., Lomonosova M.N., Vlasova N.V., Pinzhenina E.A.
  2. Digitization have made by ObjectScan 1600.This integrated workstation is characterized by on-top scan design for full-frame focus, a maximum of 1600 dpi (equal to 1 Gigabyte pixels), color CCD, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for specimen label and ID barcode, and image archive and privileged-account cloud management system.
