The birding expedition was carried out across forest patches in Tosso, Kurmi Local Government, Taraba State, Nigeria. The area is characterized as lowland forest with an elevation of about 335m and lies between the Obudu plateau to the west, the Mambilla Plateau to the east and the Bamenda highlands in Cameroon to the south. The terrain is hilly and rocky and has derived savanna in areas where forest has been destroyed. Several streams were seen in the forest with most of them dry at the peak of the dry season. Tosso is close to the Donga Basin which was categorized as an Important Biodiversity Area in 2002 (BirdLife International) with over 200 bird species recorded thus far. This expedition took place from 18 to 21 December 2017. Some species of interest were: African Black Duck (Anas sparsa), Palm-nut Vulture (Gypohierax angolensis), European Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), Swamp Nightjar (Caprimulgus natalensis), Black Bee-eater (Merops gularis), Lanner Falcon (Falco biarmicus), Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus), Slender-billed Greenbul (Stelgidillas gracilirostris), Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis), an undescribed Greenbul, a flock of swallows that looked like Black Saw-wing (Psalidoprocne pristoptera) while not resembling subspecies petiti known from nearby montane areas, and a Yellow Longbill (Macrosphenus flavicans) whose plumage appeared different from that of the expected subspecies. This dataset contains a total of 64 species.Purpose
This data set contain bird species that illustrate the importance of the site including some of conservation concern. When collated with other data, this information will be provided to the Government at both the State and Federal levels to push for the conservation of these sites.
